The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive which came into force in January 2007, aims to both reduce the amount of electrical and electronic equipment being produced and to encourage businesses to reuse, recycle and recover it. The Directive also aims to improve the environmental performance of businesses that manufacture, supply, use, recycle and recover electrical and electronic equipment.
In 2004, UK businesses disposed of 2 million computers into landfill sites, and with a number of highly toxic 'ingredients' used in their manufacture computer disposal is rapidly becoming a major environmental issue.
WEEE legislation introduced new responsibilities for businesses and other non-household users of electrical and electronic equipment (EEE). This includes businesses, schools, hospitals, and government agencies, when they dispose of their electrical waste. These organisations need to ensure that all separately collected WEEE is treated and recycled.
Therefore companies are encouraged to have equipment taken away by a company with a Waste Management Licence in order for the equipment to be destroyed and recycled properly; XPO IT Services hold this license.
Businesses which need to dispose of over 200kg of electrical waste must now hold a Waste Producers License, registering as a producer under the Hazardous Waste Regulations; XPO IT Services can provide companies with this.
It is illegal to throw electrical equipment in a bin or skip as electrical equipment (especially CRT’s) contains hazardous lead and phosphorous.
Government has consulted on a review of the Duty of Care, registration of waste carriers and waste brokers in England and Wales. The consultation considered how the current systems can be improved to reduce the opportunities for those involved in waste crimes. The Duty of Care review included new proposals covering the handling of non-household WEEE. This work is continuing.
