Only a Third of European WEEE Legally Recycled

A major two-year investigation has deduced that only a third of waste electronics and electrical equipment (WEEE) was properly recycled.
Results show that just 35% of EU discarded WEEE was correctly recycled in 2012 leaving around 4.7 million tonnes that was wrongfully dealt with within the EU.
The Head of Environmental Security Sub-Directorate of INTERPOL and coordinator of the investigation, David Higgins, believes that 'The law enforcement community needs to be proactive with illicit e-waste investigations complimented by strengthened prosecution and sentencing'.
