Apple Move into Health Data Industry:

In the company’s latest acquisition, tech giant Apple take-over personal health data start-up business Gliimpse.

The deal was made earlier this year, but the details have only recently been revealed by Apple:  A spokesperson for the company said that "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans”.

Gliimpse is a start-up company, founded by Anil Sethi and first launched in 2013 with the aim to make it easier for users to collate and share their own health data in a simple and easily shareable format: “Gliimpse began with a simple idea: everyone should be able to manage their health records, and share them securely with those they trust,” the company claimed at the time.

“By unlocking hospital silos, we aggregate fragmented data into Medicare-mandated patient summaries. Gliimpse is your personal health history in the palm of your hand.”

Currently there is no information on Gliimpse’s official website about the deal with Apple. The move represents the most recent by Apple out of many previously, into the world of gathering, analysing and sharing health information, a key factor in the design of their Apple Watch.

The Apple Watch 2 is expected to further focus on this area of data; with reports highlighting that improved battery life on the device will make it easier to add more sensors to track health data.

The key hope by Apple is that this focus upon health data will attract a wider range of customers for its devices; in light of recent reports that suggested that Apple watch sales had fallen by a huge 55 per cent in the second quarter of 2016.
