2015 WEEE Targets Announced

The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS) has announced in a report that the overall waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collection target for 2015 is 506,878 tonnes.

This is approximately 16,000 tonnes more than the total amount of household WEEE collected and recorded as evidence in 2014.

The report acknowledges that the new target is above the requirements to achieve the EU member state target of 484,661 tonnes.

Nevertheless, it states that internal UK targets should be reflective of “likely WEEE arisings that producers have an obligation to finance”.

This follows the announcement in February that internal UK targets for 2014 were exceeded by more than 1,000 tonnes.

Since 2010, the collection rates for the majority of WEEE categories have risen (see table). But display equipment has seen a marked fall, with the collected tonnages dropping annually since 2011.

Explaining this anomaly, the BIS report states that a peak was reached following the digital switchover in the television market which is now declining. This is coupled with a general lightweighting of displays in recent years.

In March, Valpak’s Adrian Hawkes called for BIS to announce targets up to four years in advance so that operators could take a longer term view on recycling strategies.
